While the recent cold snap has residents of this bird-friendly village scrambling to assist the local avian population, Snowbirds of a different kind may fly high above this area later this afternoon.
The Canadian Forces are expected to show their support for the Invictus Games with a CF-18 flyover of Whistler Village around 4:15 p.m. today.
The CF18 Hornets are from the Tactical Flying Operations Squads in Cold Lake Alberta, with some training taking place in Comox, BC.
This flyover will have a special meaning for at least one of the participating athletes. Christian Lentz, an Invictus athlete representing Canada, is a former Snowbird himself. Lentz will compete in wheelchair curling, alpine skiing, swimming and skeleton over the course of the games.
Flyover events are weather-dependant, and the flight-plans not publicly shared, so the chances of spotting one of the jets above Lions Bay are not guaranteed.
Still, if you hear a roar from above late this afternoon, make sure to look up and you may get a distant glimpse of one of these rare birds.
