Village Welcomes, Congratulations, and Christmas Updates...

...and heartfelt gratitude to our emergency professionals and volunteers

Mark, Kylie, Teyanna and Alexis Moore

Winter solstice has just arrived, and so have these new families to Periwinkle Place.

Mark and Alexis and their teenage daughters Teyanna and Kylie moved to Lions Bay from Walnut Grove in Langley where they had resided for many years. They have owned an electric bicycle retail business for the past 12 years called Cit-E Cycles.

The Moore family have wanted to move here for some time, but never dreamed they would end up owning a house on the same street as Mark’s sister, well-known local realtor Kim Taylor. The cousins are very excited to be able to hang out together whenever they want.

Matt, Naomi, Chloe and Rachel Trask.

The Trasks moved to Lions Bay in September and are excited to be part of the community. They have lived in Horseshoe Bay for the last ten years and knew the Village would be a great fit for them.

Over the years they had met several lovely Lions Bay families at Gleneagles school, where their daughters attended.

Matt is a high school teacher and Rachel is a counsellor. They both work in West Vancouver. The family feels very welcome. Their neighbours have been super friendly. They have already attended a few community gatherings, and look forward to more in the future. Everyone is excited to further explore the area including hiking, swimming, paddle boarding, and hopefully playing with a new puppy next summer.

Carla, Leo and Andre

New residents to our community can come in small packages, too. My neighbours on upper Oceanview Road, Carla Babcock and Andre Schorlemmer, are pleased to share the news of the birth of their son, Leo. Now three months old, I met him at a neighbourhood party this week end. What a cutie!

Leo has been enjoying hikes in the woods and naps in front of the wood stove. He does not enjoy being stuck in traffic jams. Carla and Andre are excited to introduce Leo to the natural world around Lions Bay and eventually to take him climbing and skiing.

Jessie and Joel

Sometimes you get two packages when most get one.

Danielle Simons and Brennan Dubois-Philips had twins, daughter Jessie and son Joel in late June. The siblings have a big sister, three-year-old Charlie.

They live in Ucluelet, but lived with long-time Lions Bay residents and proud grandparents Rob and Ruth Simons all summer. They couldn’t stay away from the grandkids for long and were recently with them in Ucluelet.

Stewart, Anna and Freddy

Former long-time residents and well-known local realtor Thyra McKilligan and her husband Andy became first time grandparents in October.

Daughter Anna McKilligan (1999 Lions Bay School grad) and Stewart Harms welcomed their son Frederick, aka “Freddy”, to the family in October.

Both parents are lawyers and live in the Mount Pleasant area, not a far commute for the grandparents to see the apple of their eyes.

Updates

On behalf of all of us, our thanks and gratitude go to our Village-based emergency professionals and volunteers. They were all immediately involved with the Battani Creek event before its magnitude and issues were recognized and other resources requested from the province.

Led by Chief Barret Germscheid, Lions Bay Fire Rescue has personnel numbering in the high 20s at any given moment, but only about four are residents. Search and Rescue has about 35 members, but only long-time Director Ed Langford and another Villager live here. Emergency Support Services, led by Director Mary Brown, has five members (of which I am proud to say I am one). All are residents. We are fortunate to have outstanding leadership and participation by our emergency professionals and volunteers.

Most of us have very mixed emotions as we prepare for the holidays and time with friends and family. This year, the pain and suffering of those who have lost loved ones, or who are displaced due to the Battani Creek slide is weighing on everyone.

The holidays are around the corner. I wish all of you the best of the season.
