Village Congratulations and Updates

Weddings, Citizen of the Year, and a 10-year Village employee returns

With the arrival of fall and the return of rain and colder weather, summer has become a distant memory. Well, maybe not for three Lions Bay families whose children were married this summer.

Madison Mailey and Maxwell Lattimer are thrilled to share that they were married on August 31 at Madison’s parents’ (Kim Mailey and Victoria Rogers) seaside home in Kelvin Grove. They have been together nearly five years. During this time, they navigated the pandemic, both competed in the Olympics, transitioned from sports to professional careers, and most importantly, committed to each other as partners for life. They are overjoyed to take this next step together. It was an intimate wedding and they loved every minute of this special day. A honeymoon in Hawaii has followed. The couple live in the West End but dream of putting down roots in Lions Bay.

Congratulations Madison and Maxwell!

Kelvin Grove residents Phillip and Tracy Marsh’s son Sawyer was married to his beloved Abbey Deppiesse on Labour Day. The marriage took place at the bride’s family cabin on beautiful Horne Lake, a short distance from Parksville/Qualicum Beach. The location and weather were perfect. The intimate wedding was attended by 70 close friends and family members.

Sawyer has been a Lions Bay resident since he was a toddler. He graduated from Queens’ Commerce and now works at MNP in Vancouver among other ventures. Abbey is a graduate of Simon Fraser and is in marketing at Arcteryx. As the proud parents say, “They are annoyingly compatible.” While they reside in New Westminster, they are regular visitors to the Sea to Sky Corridor, much more due to their passion for outdoor adventures than to visit Sawyer’s much neglected and forsaken parents.

Congratulations Sawyer and Abbey!

Mountain Drive residents Tom and Rebecca Caspersen celebrated Tom's son, James' wedding in mid-summer. On June 15, James Caspersen and Danielle McVicar exchanged vows in a beautiful outdoor ceremony at the Wallace in the North Vancouver Shipyards.

A common theme in Danielle and James' lives has been helping others. James worked for years with the homeless in Richmond and conducted homeless counts throughout B.C. Danielle has coordinated camps for kids with cancer and their families since 2018.  In fact, the newlyweds met while working at Camp Goodtimes.

On July 1, James headed to Calgary to begin a three-year medical degree. Danielle joined him in August to continue her work with the Canadian Cancer Society.

Congratulations James and Danielle!

A traditional component of our Canada Day celebration is the presentation of the Village’s most prestigious awards, the Citizen of the Year, and the Citizen of Distinction (recognition beyond our municipal boundaries, this year not awarded.) Not everyone goes to the Beach Park on Canada Day and I was surprised there was no announcement by the Village through its various communication outlets as to who was the winner of the Citizen of the Year. I was subsequently pleased to find out longtime resident Val Morton received the award.

Fortunately, our independent press picked up on the lack of an announcement and featured the winner in an article. Take a moment (HERE) to read about Val, who makes life better for all of us.

Congratulations to the Citizen of the Year – Val Morton!

In my last article, I mentioned that the 12th member of the past Council or their team had departed since the new Council and administration assumed control less than two years ago.

The vacuum created leaves us with no corporate memory or culture. A key role, the Deputy Corporate Officer position, remains unfilled due to a lack of applicants since it was vacated June 1.

Luckily, Shawna Driscoll returns from maternity leave this week. Please drop in to welcome back this valued employee. Her 10 years of experience in Lions Bay is more than our entire office staff combined. I am sure her wisdom and experience will immediately be put to work.

Thanksgiving is around the corner. I wish everyone and their families the best of the season.
