Barbara and David Enns named as landslide victims
A body of a second person missing since a landslide swept through Lions Bay a week ago has been found, according to Village Mayor Ken Berry.
"Lions Bay residents David and Barbara Enns have now both been found. David Enns was found on December 15th. Barbara Enns was found today, December 21st, following an intense coordinated and skilled search," said Berry. He noted that names have been released with the family's consent.
David was located last Sunday, the day after the large landslide thundered down Battani Creek and swept a home off its foundations and down the hillside.
It took search and rescue teams a week to locate Barbara.
Berry said the recovery was made possible "through the tireless efforts of search and rescue teams, local volunteers, and emergency responders who have worked around the clock under challenging conditions."
Squamish RCMP confirm the second body was found at the site of the slide just after 5:30 p.m. today.
The coordinated effort included teams from Lions Bay, Metro Vancouver and the province of BC. Thirty-nine agencies and contractors have taken part thus far, according to a December 20 update.
The Enns family have lived in the Village since the early 1970's and their two children have grown up here.
The local state of emergency continues during clean-up efforts following the landslide. Heavy equipment has been moved around the site by helicopter in order to better access the very steep terrain.
Residents on Crystal Falls Road and on Goldenrod Avenue remain under an evacuation order.
December 22 Correction:
Residents on Crystal Falls Road report they have not yet received the all-clear from North Shore Emergency Services to return to their homes, and the post has been changed to reflect this new information.
