Reflections in Flame

Lions Bay's volunteer firefighters tell us why they do it*

Lions Bay will celebrate Firefighter's Day at a gala event held on September 7 down at the beach. Running from 2 until 10 p.m. at Lions Bay Beach Park, it promises to be fun for the entire family, with kids games, barbecue, raffle, beer garden ... and more.

The 'more' part, of course, is the firefighters themselves, volunteering to raise money to ensure the team is ready to keep the Village safe.

The Watershed contacted Fire Chief Germscheid in an effort to find out just what it is that keeps these volunteers coming out, week after week. The question bounced around the department before returning to us with some interesting insights from a number of the local recruits.

Firefighter Teresa tells The Watershed that the best part for her is the culture. "Other departments may be bigger, they may have more resources, more volume of calls, but... because we are a small department and we all live here in beautiful Lions Bay, we all hang out, work out and have fun together on top of all the training we do and the calls we attend."

She says the family feeling extends to the work environment. "Curiosity is more than welcome and making a mistake is seen as a learning opportunity during training, so you feel safe to explore, learn and get better. We are, in my opinion, one of the best volunteer departments and the best place for new firefighters to train and keep their skills sharp."

Firefighter Chris echoes Teresa's thoughts about LBFR as a family, and notes he wouldn’t have the hands-on skills and knowledge needed without it. For him, the team is a group of people who are great role models all working toward the goal of helping people through their worst day.

With LBFR, "you surround yourself with great characters, role models, and have the experience of a lifetime, making unforgettable memories, and learning skills that make you a force to be reckoned with," he says.

"The people I have met here have changed my life substantially. I’ll never forget my time here, and I am very proud to have been a part of this crew."

Firefighter Tegan says that joining LBFR has been an unparalleled opportunity for her growth as a firefighter. With twice-weekly training, she says LBFR demands serious commitment, but it never feels like work.

"The entire team steps up to keep everything in top shape. This shared responsibility fosters a strong sense of teamwork and mutual support," she says.

"The dedication and drive of everyone at LBFR are truly inspiring. Each member is committed not only to their own development but also to the success of the team. This environment of continuous learning and professional growth makes LBFR an ideal place for those serious about advancing their firefighting careers."

As a newbie, Emma began her firefighting career with LBFR and says she is inspired by the camaraderie and respect within the department. She notes that with weekly training in everything from auto extrication to rope rescues, "we’re lucky to learn from the best."

"I’ll always remember my first page and call. Witnessing my colleagues prepare and head out together as a cohesive crew was truly special. Serving this beautiful community alongside each other is an honour. This is why I love LBFR and am thrilled to be a part of this dedicated, hardworking family.”

LBFR has always been supported by local residents, and continues to look for volunteers from the community. Firefighter Day is your chance to support this team.
