Jeremy Valeriote reflects on an historic win for the BC Greens
The final tallies are not yet in from the October 19 provincial election, though it is clear that the BC New Democratic Party will form the government.
With the margin of seats so close, the two elected BC Green Party candidates are sure to have a significant role in provincial decision-making.
New Member of the Legislative Assembly Jeremy Valeriote took a moment in the chaotic week after the election to answer a few questions posed by The Watershed.
Q. As a long-term candidate in this region, what does finally becoming MLA for West Vancouver-Sea to Sky mean to you?
A. It's gratifying, exciting, and a little daunting given the size of the riding, which stretches 200 kilometres end to end. But it's a challenge I'm looking forward to embracing.
Q. This was a hard-won victory, and while the margin is much larger than when you lost to Jordan Sturdy by 60 votes, it still could be seen as evidence of a divided electorate. Can you talk about how you will represent all the constituents in the riding?
A. The job of MLA is to listen to everyone, draw threads from all the input to find common cause and common ground that everyone can agree on, and craft solutions that respect those. I'm not sure the electorate is so divided in West Van-Sea to Sky. All three candidates were reasonable, respectful, and agreed that we need to chart a path forward for the economy, environment and society that benefits all British Columbians. This includes making life more affordable; transitioning our economy and energy systems; building more housing; implementing regional transit, and improving healthcare with a focus on better outcomes.
Q. Anything else you'd like to share with voters?
A. I'm very thankful for all the support I received from the residents of Lions Bay, and look forward to visiting soon.
