Heavy equipment to be choppered in to Battani Creek slide site

Search and debris-clearing operations continue today following a deadly landslide that swept through the Village on Saturday morning.

A long-term resident of Lions Bay was found dead following the devastating Battani Creek-area slide, while another resident of the home remains missing.

A statement Thursday from Lions Bay Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Ross Blackwell said the provincial Ministries of Transportation and Transit (MOTT) and Water, Lands and Resource Stewardship (WALRS) are working together to determine “jurisdictional responsibilities and options” for the Battani Creek drainage system.

Provincial support means that recovery machinery, including a heavy-lift helicopter to facilitate the strategic hillside placement of large equipment, will be in use at the site.

Mayor Ken Berry said that support continues from multiple agencies and specialists including Lions Bay Search and Rescue, and that the local state of emergency will continue until further notice. Homes above the highway remain evacuated until authorities deem the area safe to return.

A further update about the search operation is expected from the Lions Bay municipality later today.
