Human Rights Day is Tomorrow

What will you do to mark the day?

Every year, Human Rights Day is marked on December 10 to commemorate the day the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights back in 1948.

This picture of our gorgeous, sandy beach was taken by Herb Johnston on Sunday, and is a small reminder of all we hold dear in this beautiful place.

And yet the daily news reminds us of how many people around the world do not share this sense of safety, and others who are displaced without any place to call home.

In the midst of the busiest holiday season of the year, not many people take the time to acknowledge this disparity. And for those who do, the number and demand of the many non-governmental agencies seeking funding in support of these goals can feel overwhelming.

One suggestion on this day calling for universal human rights is Amnesty International Canada. They too are an NGO, but what sets them apart is that through their organization you can also take direct, meaningful action without spending a cent.

Amnesty's letter-writing campaigns have proven effective again and again. Every year Amnesty launches a letter-writing campaign to fight injustice and to support people around the world whose human rights are under threat. Since the Write For Rights campaign began in 2001, more than 100 people whose lives and rights were compromised have been released or exonerated.
