Great BC ShakeOut This Week

Earthquake Preparedness event tomorrow at Lions Bay Store

The Great British Columbia ShakeOut earthquake drill is happening tomorrow, at 10:17 a.m.

This annual event is spearheaded by the provincial ministry of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness. In a press release, communications officer Anna Kazi says that this is an opportunity for local residents to practice “Drop, Cover and Hold On.”

The province offers a wide variety of preparedness aids to assist families who want to ensure they are ready in the case of an earthquake emergency. For those looking to create an emergency plan for their family, help is available HERE.

There is also an earthquake and tsunami preparedness guide available, and you can learn more about the new national earthquake early warning system HERE.

Emergency Support Services (ESS) is offering a free water giveaway from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the parking lot of Lions Bay Store to mark the day. Volunteers will be offering residents a four-litre bottle of water for every family member.

"Four litres is the amount of water that each person requires for a single day," says ESS manager Mary Brown, who organized the giveaway.

Brown says the giveaway was funded by the ESS and made possible by Lynne Jacobs of Lions Bay Store, who has ordered the water and will allow the use of the store parking lot for the day.
