Emergency Operations Suspended

Battani Creek site shut down until early January

Operations at the site of last week's deadly landslide have been suspended until January.

Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Ross Blackwell made an announcement last night on behalf of the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC).

Extensive work has continued at the site since the December 14, when a debris torrent swept away a family home and took the lives of long-time residents Barbara and David Enns.

Crews have been removing dangerous trees, clearing slide debris, reinstalling local services and performing extensive geotechnical and structural assessments. A large helicopter has assisted with the movement of heavy equipment around the incredibly steep terrain affected by the landslide.

During the shutdown, the 24-hour onsite security that has been in place for the past week will continue to safeguard the area. Work is expected to resume at the site in early January.

No information was shared as to the status of the local state of emergency that has been in place since the day after the landslide, or whether the families evacuated from their homes will have to remain elsewhere during the period of the shutdown.

The announcement stated that no further communications from the EOC will be released until early in the new year.

Edited 10 a.m. December 24:

CAO Blackwell said that power has now been restored to the homes on Crystal Falls Road, and that the Evacuation Orders for those homes have been downgraded to Evacuation Alerts. The homes on Goldenrod Avenue remain under Evacuation Order.
