Bear Smart event to focus on remembrance and education

Lions Bay Bear Smart is organizing a Bear Memorial to honour the young bear shot last year and the two bears shot in 2022. After so many years of peaceful co-existence with bears, the bear deaths were a distressing reminder that we need to manage our garbage and other food attractants to keep bears safe.

On March 10th at 11 a.m. residents are invited to gather around the bear statue in front of the village office to light candles, which will be provided, and listen to a few speakers about Bear Smart. Residents are also invited to bring a flower or pebble to lay below the bear statue in commemoration.

There will be refreshments, activities and a question and answer session in the hall after the ceremony. A Bear Smart Pledge will be available for residents to sign if they want to commit to keeping bears safe. Kids welcome!
