Birth news, nuptials and a belated Happy Valentine’s Day

Welch family 2.0 (find the original story HERE). We continue on with this Lions Bay love story. Previously I told you of Sydney (née Link) and Kellen Welch who married in our village in 2019. Both Sydney and Kellen were raised in our village, attended Lions Bay elementary school (2001 and 1999 grads respectively) and spent hundreds of blissful childhood days swimming at our beach park. Their wedding photos were even taken in the forest at our little school.
Their first child, son Wyatt, was born in 2023 and this year Christmas came early with baby brother Hudson arriving December 21. Congratulations Sydney and Kellen! Happy Isleview resident Leslie Nolin is spending a lot of time with her grandkids.

Miranda Loutet and Daniel Zimskind welcomed their first child, Oliver Kenneth Zimskind, on January 4th, 2025. They live in Toronto and it's been a particularly frigid winter so they have been doing lots of hibernating indoors with newborn cuddles keeping them warm.
Daniel is a business consultant and Miranda recently successfully defended her PhD in Epidemiology at the University of Toronto in December - just in time for the baby! She will be starting a post-doctoral fellowship at Harvard in the fall. Miranda is the daughter of long time Crosscreek residents Myron and Susan Loutet.
Oliver is Miranda and Dan’s good luck charm because ever since he was born, the Eagles haven't lost a game, going all the way to the Super Bowl. Dan is originally from Philadelphia so is a big Eagles fan, which of course means Oliver is too. I have a sense that when Miranda, Dan, and Oliver are asleep, it’s Susan who is watching over them.

Emily Matthias Bennett is the daughter of Liz Carson and Roy Matthias. Her baby boy - Bruce Bennett - was born February 6 at Lions Gate Hospital. Hubby Adam and Emily have lived in North Vancouver since they met in 2020.
Emily has worked in Lions Bay since 2009, mostly at Howe Sound Marine for the last 12 years. Adam is a plumber working for CBRE.
The new parents look forward to Bruce accompanying Emily’s mom on many hikes around Lions Bay, as well as beach visits while Emily is on maternity leave.
Emily graduated from Lions Bay Elementary school in 1999 as did Miranda Loutet. The two families lived nearby in the Crosscreek townhouses for a little less than a year.
Miranda and Emily were born a week apart in September 1990. Emily’s family subsequently moved to Panorama Road in June 1991. Childhood friends. Born close together, neighbours, and school mates - babies born about a month apart, go figure.
Proud new granddad, soon to be our 26-year Public Works stalwart, Garth Begley stopped me at the side of the road recently to show me some pictures. They were of his son Mason and his wife Larissa with their newly arrived daughter, Navy, born on January 2. All are well.
When you see Garth patrolling our Village, give him a celebratory honk or a wave. Given the opportunity, I am pretty sure he will stop and show you the pictures. Welcome to the new addition and congratulations to the Begley family.

Mary’s and my middle son Nicholas (Nick) graduated from Lions Bay Elementary school in 1993. Post-Grade 12, he entered the hospitality industry. This culminated in him managing a restaurant in Whistler until 2011, when he thought Australia held greener pastures for him.
This proved correct. He became successful in several executive positions for a public company which operates hotels, entertainment locations, and resorts. Nick was working at the company’s ski resort in Thredbow, NSW, in 2020 when he met the love of his life, native Australian Susanna Kable. It turned out she had similar feelings, and things progressed rapidly. Grandson Harvey Kable McLaughlin was born in April 2023.
While Susanna was on maternity leave, she was head-hunted by a company operating out of Singapore. An offer was made that was too good to pass up. They moved to Singapore in March 2024.
Susanna is a senior manager for her employer and travels the world to serve their clients. Nicholas is the General Manager of One15 Marina, and is responsible for hotel, food and beverage, and marina operations (with superyacht facilities.)
What was missing in all this career building — becoming parents, moving to Singapore to take on new jobs — was a wedding. In late January at the top of the mountain at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort, the wedding was held.
Susanna had always wanted a winter wedding and to be married outside. In -10 degree weather as the sun was setting, the ceremony was witnessed by 50 friends and family from around the globe. Congratulations to the bride and groom.
Happy Valentine’s Day, everyone. It is a day dedicated to love, romance and deep emotional connections, so take a moment and appreciate those that give you these feelings.
It is also Family Day Long Weekend. Take advantage of the opportunity to spend time with your family. In the U.S., it’s the President’s Day Long Weekend – let’s not go there.
